To be honest, Thailand government/palace just want to close eyes/ears of its citizen. Its mass media and justice systems are desperately rotting. The monarchy and the survival of Chakri dynasty are the first priority in EVERYTHING, regardless of its people well being. The lèse-majesté law is just a powerful tool to PAD's government, elitist, royalist, and conservatist to throw non-yellow people to jail. It is also used to shutdown/turn-off media those are presenting the TRUTH. Regarding the defusing political crises, which he have been appearing to solve the issues, they are actually his exit strategy to turn-down anyone that he is not approve to become government. At the end, the people who obtain the power are the rightist, which love to support the royal family. The latest group is (misnomer) P.A.D. Thai royal family is above politics, right? Yeah right!

Hey Val, a couple of points:

1) You need to read a bit more widely on this topic. Thailand's government cares and Thais care. In fact, the current government has made protecting the monarchy priority no. 1. So if they didn't care, why woudl they do that?

2) How do you know that Nicolaides knew what he was doing and why would you think that going to jail was a publicity stunt? Presumably publicity would aid sales of his book? But it is available free now?

3) I think the meaning of the title is the monarchy that is not amused, not the Economist.

Guess what, Thailand could care less what you think. They are in fact quite happy that you are not amused as they don't find lese majeste a humourous matter either. Harry Nicolaides knew full well the risk he was taking and he deliberately made sure the govt knew what he had written. It's a publicity stunt as far as he's concerned.
