The Harbottle & Lewis letter says of the photos, “the fact that they have appeared in another jurisdiction is meaningless”. How can they, or the Palace, possibly think that? It is completely absurd — and in my view deeply wrong — to suggest that something already published in many other countries can reasonably be withheld from the British public.

You briefly referred to the pictures being of interest to the public, if not in the public interest.

Removing the ‘if’ neatly summarises the situation. Publishing these pictures, taken in private of nothing illegal or immoral, is not justifiable, and perhaps the least convincing excuse is “all the other countries have done it”.

It’s so easy for us to forget the huge and important distinction between something being of interest to the public, and it being in the public interest.
