There has been some important news today. An agreement has been struck to remove the ‘Leveson’ amendment to the Defamation Bill. This is welcomed news. All of your letters to MPs and the Prime Minister have made it clear why the Defamation Bill matters, and why it must not be caught up in the debate about press regulation. Thank you so much for taking up the cause so actively.
We are still waiting for confirmation that the Defamation Bill will be back before Parliament in the next couple of weeks, so if you haven’t written to your MP or the Prime Minister already, could we urge you to do that now?. We also have much to do to make sure that all MPs (and especially those who joined Parliament in 2010) know about the injustices that gave rise to the Bill. We are meeting with as many as we can to talk about ending libel tourism, the hurdle of “serious harm” to prevent vexatious cases, restrictions on corporations suing individuals and a new public interest defence.
As soon as we have further information about a timetable for the Defamation Bill returning to the House of Commons we will let you know.

Some good hard work in reaching the finishing line – much of that made possible by members of the ordinary public who signed all the petitions and donated.
By the way, if you want a summary of ludicrous libel cases to show your MPs I have a nice collection of summaries. Not hard to amass since it was just a case of going through all reported libel cases and eliminating the few that had any merit.
Time now I think for the Libel Reform Campaign to offer more appeal to more people. It now needs to highlight the new wave of ridiculous cases in the pipeline and to support a broader range of defendants. To some observers there are some elements of the Libel Reform Campaign who have become a little too ‘cliquey’ and up themselves. It has been too selective in the defendants it has supported although I realise you have to choose your battles. However, I am sure many would have liked to have seen some more support given to those being pursued by Lord McAlpine. The cases and the conduct of those cases clearly need to be looked at before we see yet more clearly hopeless cases bounced between the courts until the judiciary finally make up its mind and boot it out.

Tonight I have just come across this. I think this is the type of thing I have been going on about for years now and this needs to addressed. It very likely that the libel claimant in this case is receiving fee exemption and has not paid costs from his previous lost cases. As you will observe the claim is ridiculous and speculative and entirely vexatious.
This claimant is making mockery of the law and the system and is drain on both and it is a scandal this being allowed to continue.
